Pooch Friendly Pizza: Can your dog have a slice?

Dog delivering pizza to another dog.

We all love our dogs and want to share delicious treats with them as much as we can. But those treats, especially if they contain things like grapes, garlic, and other deliciously deadly foods, can cause way more harm than good for our pets. To help you avoid dangerous meals for your dog, keep on scrolling to find answers to the Internet's most commonly asked questions about deadly dog foods.

Can dogs eat Pizza?

The short answer is no, dogs cannot have traditional pizza. Not only are the fats and grease unhealthy for the dog, the ingredients can be potentially fatal if ingested in large enough quantities. To illustrate this, I've listed common pizza ingredients that can kill your puppy below.

  1. Garlic - Too much garlic can send your canine to the ER. Just like in humans, garlic is incredibly flavorful, but for our furry friends, even a small amount can be toxic. Garlic contains compounds that can break down a dog's red blood cells, leading to weakness, lethargy, and potentially fatal anemia.

  2. Onions - Super tasty onions can cause extreme harm. Like garlic, onions contain compounds that attack red blood cells, making it hard for dogs to get the oxygen they need. Even small amounts can lead to anemia and make your dog feel weak or unwell. Remember, any form of onion—from cooked to powdered—can cause trouble.

  3. Tomato Sauce - Tomato sauce might sound like a simple topping, but many sauces contain garlic, onions, and high levels of salt, all of which can be harmful. Plus, tomatoes themselves contain solanine, which can be toxic to dogs if they're unripe or in large amounts.

  4. Pepperoni and Other Processed Meats - These meats are flavorful, but the fat, spices, and high salt content can be harsh on a dog's stomach and even lead to serious conditions like pancreatitis. Dogs simply don't tolerate these high-fat foods as well as humans.

  5. Unbaked Dough - Raw pizza dough can be life-threatening. When ingested, the dough expands in the stomach, potentially causing bloating or even stomach rupture. The yeast also produces alcohol as it ferments, which can lead to alcohol poisoning in dogs.

As you can see, the very things that make pizza appealing to most humans can spell disaster for dogs. Even pizza crust can be dangerous for dogs, especially the scrumptious ones from places like Papa John's and Pizza Hut. These places coat their crusts in a garlicky butter sauce specifically designed to clog arteries and keep the backs of all Americans as wide as possible.

As tempting as it may be, avoid tossing your dog a slice or leaving them your crust. They may genuinely enjoy the taste, but the risk is not worth the reward. If you're interested in making a pizza for your dog, then here is an easy-to-make dog-friendly pizza recipe.

Dog Safe Pizza

The key to making a tasty pizza that's flavorful and won't cause you to harm your dog is to avoid garlic and most store-bought sauces. Cooked dough, in most cases, is fine, but since most of us aren't chefs, there's a chance you may botch it and end up hurting your friend.

Instead of using dough, use a keto-friendly tortilla. Now it's important to read the ingredients of the tortilla before giving it to your dog, as some brands use Xylitol, which is very toxic to dogs. Learn more about Xylitol toxicity here.

Be sure to avoid it, garlic, onions, and the other dangers I mentioned in this article, and you'll deliver a super safe, dog- and human-friendly pizza. Here is the complete ingredient list for the best dog-friendly pizza.

  1. Keto-friendly, Xylitol-free tortilla

  2. Vegan Cheese - This may not be the tastiest option, but it's less likely to hurt a dog as long as it doesn't contain garlic or onion.

  3. Sliced, Organic Turkey - A healthy substitute for traditional pepperoni and Italian sausage.

Once you've assembled all the ingredients, place it in your Air Fryer for about 3 - 4 minutes at 375°F or until the cheese is melted. Next, let it cool and serve it to the luckiest dog on the planet.
