I made it a personal mission of mine to combat inflation by making as much money as possible and saving wherever I can. One of the main areas we all spend a ton of money on is food. In fact, next to mortgage it was the largest expense in my household for years.
I found that whenever I ordered or made food, there would be an abundance of leftovers that ended up being thrown out. In an effort to reduce waste, I would be sure to eat any leftovers that didn't smell weird. If you're considering eating something from that takeout box in the back of the fridge, be sure to bookmark my super simple yet effective tool.
If you're food isn't available in the calculator's list of options yet, keep scrolling for answers to the Internet's most frequently asked questions about food in your refrigerator.
You should be safe to eat your pizza if it's been in the fridge for up to 4 days. Keep in mind this varies depending on the toppings, dough used, and the pizza's life prior to entering your fridge.
For example, if you've decided to keep a box of pizza in the oven or out on your table overnight, it could decrease its lifespan even if you refrigerate it after. Cheese and other dairy products just don't last as long as meat, bread, and other foods.
Bread tends to fare better than pizza when stored in the refrigerator. You can get up to two weeks of life out of refrigerated bread. This stands in stark contrast to bread stored at room temperature which lasts a paltry 4 days.
Cooked shrimp will last up to 4 days if kept refrigerated. Be carefu not to set your microwave or Air Fryer too high when reheating your shrimp as doing so will make your food rubbery.
For most of the brands I buy, like Silk, after opening, the milk should be used within 14 days. Shortly after the 15-day mark you'll notice a strong odor when you twist the cap off.
In addition to this, the liquid itself turns yellowish and begins to clump. In my experience, the non-flavored almond milk tends to last a little longer than the flavor-infused variants.
Pizza dough fares a little better in the fridge than its final evolution at 3 - 5 days. Once the pizza is cooked and you add cheese and other toppings, you can expect the maximum life expectancy to drop about 1 day or so.
When you consider the total lifespan of the pizza from infancy to adulthood, it actually lasts quite a bit longer than other dishes. In its doughy, baby stage it can last up to 5 days and then in its final pizza stage, another 4 days, for a total of 9 days.
Velveeta cheese in an unopened package can out live your dog if it's stored properly. But, if you open its foil container you will reduce its lifespan to roughly 8 weeks. Now, I don't know about you but I don't trust cheese that lasts for half a college semester.
The cheese is delicious and inexpensive but you've got to wonder what god-tier preservatives are thrown into the mixture to allow it to withstand the test of time for so long. It's not just Veleeta but many other packaged and processed cheeses last way longer that you would expect from a "dairy" product. And I'm using the term dairy lightly here.
In countries like the United States, we're fortunate enough to have access to an abundance of great food. So much so that we throw out tons of otherwise edible food every single year.
I have a tendency to over-order food for my family which used to result in wasted money and resources. I came to realize that simply eating storing the excess food and eating it the next day was a great way to save hundreds of dollars per month.
Exactly how much did I save, you ask? In total, by eating leftovers I saved an average of $13 per meal. Given that we eat rough 3 or 4 times per day this resulted in a minimum of $1,170 of savings per month.
I used this money to pay down my credit card balances faster, throw some extra money into my rainy day fund, and help out my family whenever they needed some extra cash. Leftovers may not be the most delicious thing you'll eat today but it could be the action that gets you a step closer to your financial goals.
